Join us... The Skyway Drive-In 7-10-20

I was scrolling around on Facebook and ran across this double feature of Evil Dead / Zombie playing at the Skyway Drive-In weeks back on social media. I'm like "Oh boy, that has to be seen at the Drive-In". The Skyway is a good hour and ten minutes away from home but nothing was going to stop us from watching these 2 fantastic films on the big screen. The 90+ degree weather doesn't faze us, it was the threats of storms and rain over the weekend and we were not sure if we want to be in the middle of a downpour trying to watch these films. Friday came around and I was scrolling around Facebook and saw a post about the weather clearing up for the evening, after checking several sources, We decided to road trip out to the Drive-In! all we needed was to bring some Judas Priest CDs and hit the road...
Skyway Marquee
We were just about there when we came upon a traffic light with no power, thinking nothing of it until we arrived. There were rows of cars and some familiar faces from Cinema Wasteland (Art Ettinger, Brian Huey, Mike Watt and Amy Lynn) outside conversing with each other. I get out to chat with some of the Wastelanders. They were telling me the power is out in the area and they were waiting around to see if power comes back on soon. I tried to chat up with some folks but I had a hard time comprehending what some of the folks were saying with most everyone wearing masks. So I kept my conversations short and friendly and went back to the car to wait a while. Eventually, the owner of the drive-in (I believe he is) was saying the power company told them it be close to 11 pm when the power would be on, so I'm thinking "That's a bit of a long wait and what if it never comes on at all?" I could come back as my tickets were redeemable. Now some of these folks traveled from far away, Cincinnati OH, Pennsylvania, and even West Virginia license plate was spotted and that would suck if they had to go back...
Anyways we pulled out and headed back home... within 5 minutes or so after getting on the highway... all the street lights were coming to life! I'm like "11 o'clock my ass! we are going back!" lo and behold it was open for business!
Grindhouse Releasing, The Evil Dead... Join Us...
We set up our lawn chairs, boombox, tuned in to the Drive-In Airwaves, and ready to watch this masterpiece! The weather was perfect, after having storms all day, the sky was pretty clear with stars and the air was perfect with a cool crisp.
The Book of the Dead... Necronomicon
The Evil Dead, great flick... I can't say how many times I've watched it, but it was a first time for Angie and me to see it at the Drive-In and it was a thrill! The intermission reel was playing drive-in quizzes and facts so we went off to the concession stands and ordered cheese sticks and drinks. I found the food prices to be very reasonable!
Drive-In History time...
After finishing our food, we decided to pack up the boombox and chairs and watch the second flick from the comfort of the car... Once again, tuning into the Drive-in airwaves...
Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE
Zombie - Great flick, great gore, and some crazy scenes like Zombie Vs. Shark, the famous injury to eye scene, oh yeah! Even better... We finally saw this on the Big Screen!
Eye-popping graphics! OUCH!
We are going to eat you...
Another good time at a Drive-In, remember folks if you love these films and never had a chance to experience them at a drive-in, I say do not hesitate, check your local listings (or not so local), and see what they are playing... If you find something, do not hesitate to make a trip out. Who knows how long they will play classics flicks all summer before the new big-budget films take over. We can only hope they will continue these classics from here on out... they can have my money as long as it keeps going...  By the way, I also heard that Grindhouse releasing is putting together a package for PIECES, another great flick, one that I actually saw a long time ago along with Don't Look in the Basement on a date night in the '80s... you can let your local Drive-In know that you want to see this and send them the link from the Grindhouse Releasing's Facebook page... Mr. Fright out...

Beware the moon, lads... A night at the Lynn Drive-In 7-2-20

Thursday, July 2nd was the last day that Lynn Drive-In was showing this classic pairing of Fast Times at Ridgemont High & An American Werewolf in London. It has been a fairly hot day out, but that wasn't going to stop us as it was also the only day Angie, J.D. and I could all go see these flicks on the Big Screen together, so that worked out perfect. We left a bit early to get a good spot on the field and we brought our lawn chairs, skeeter spray, snack foods, water, and a boom box to tune into Lynn's airwaves.
The Marquee at Lynn Drive-In

Lynn Drive-in is the oldest Drive-in here in Ohio and the second oldest in the world. It opened in 1937 as Boyers Auto Theater before changing owners. They changed the name to Lynn after their daughter in the mid-'50s. Movies played on a single screen until 1967 when they added a second screen and it became a twin drive-in. Although FM Stereo transmitters were installed in 1996, the original speakers are still out on the field and some still work.

(I wouldn't mind having a set of Drive-in speakers as a display set or a conversation piece here at the Media Crypt), now that we settled down and set up, we went off to the concession stand to see what was available, but we didn't buy anything...
Signs on the Concession booth.
We are all seated in our chairs and talking away about movies and what classic pairings that we would love to see happen at any other drive-ins in the coming days. As the sun is winding down, it is starting cool off a bit... Just waiting for darkness to arrive...
Sun is waning... waiting for darkness...
The first feature is Fast Times at Ridgemont High, this is a great flick, I have always enjoyed watching this film over the years on cable T.V. or on some sort of physical media. This is the first time we all watched this classic teen sex comedy on the Big Screen.
When this was over, there were no Intermission reels or anything, the screen was left blank till the next feature was up...
Opening Feature...
The second feature is An American Werewolf in London, a long time favorite of mine. I saw this film along with my good friend Shawn Gingerich when it came out at the movie theater and many other times when it was on cable T.V. and own it on various media formats. This is the first time I am seeing it at a Drive-In. Now folks, if you are reading this and have "NEVER SEEN THIS FILM"... pull your thumb out of your ass and go watch it however you can! David Naughton and Jenny Agutter are great in this movie. The special FX done by Rick Baker is amazing, this has possibly the best werewolf transformation scene ever, the effects still holds up well today!
Second Feature of the night... Beware the Moon!
It was a perfect night under the stars... the evening was a nice temperature after a hot day, the sky was clear and you could see the constellations. I tried to get a picture of the Big Dipper but the phone camera just wasn't cutting it.  In closing... no matter how easy it is to watch a film at home whether you can stream it or own a copy... there is nothing like getting away spending a few bucks and watching classics like these on the big screen under the stars with some of your loved ones or friends... even though there are new big-budget films waiting to be played, I still hope Drive-ins will continue to play classics throughout the year... and where ever the classics are playing, I will be planning to hit them up. If anyone wants to chat about drive-in experiences, Just message me here.

First Drive-In of the year! 6-22-20

It was a pretty warm day out and the whole family was at home. While sitting around and working on the upcoming Midnight Magazine I was thinking this is a good night to hit the drive-in, after all I could use a break, and on top of that we all been talking about the various classic movies that will be playing this year, most notably JAWSNow I am getting excited because I have never seen JAWS on the big screen and I just had to go! and even more fun is Jurrasic Park is the second billing and a lot of you know I love dinosaurs... so its a no brainer to go see this double feature! I get on the computer to look for the drive-ins around us, from what I find out, the closest ones are only open on Friday and Saturday... so I started looking for the next closest and we decided to hit the road to The MIDWAY TWIN DRIVE-IN in Ravenna/Kent only a 45-minute drive from us.
The Billboard as we reach the destination...
We left early to ensure us a good parking spot and in case there would be a large capacity of folks, it seems like we were only the second vehicle to arrive! We also had plenty of good parking choices, and for those who want to know about the social distancing, I say it went well, cars had to park one whole spot away from each other, this was a bonus as there is plenty of room to even sit outside if you wanted too.
The sign above the ticket booth...
After parking, we began to talk with each other while we had some time on our hands. Finally, the screen comes to life with old Drive-In trivia and an old black and white cartoon ad for PIC Mosquito Repellent that I really liked.
A mosquito lighting up a PIC repellent and about to die...
After the Various trivia and old ads of Popcorn, Hot dogs and etc... The movie begins...
Feature #1 - JAWS
I was excited like a little kid! I cranked up the Drive-in frequency on my stereo and  I was so ready for the JAWS big screen experience!
Quint is having a little shark problem...
I saw this movie over the years on television and the various media formats, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc... Finally, it was a thrill to experience JAWS on the big screen! Angie and JD were just as thrilled as I was. Various old concession food ads were playing at the intermission, Popcorn, Hot dogs, Ice Cream, you name it!
Quirky looking character during a popcorn commercial...
We all had some Drive in grub, Angie and I had hot dogs with mustard and deep-fried pickle spears while JD was content with a big ole bag of good ole buttered popcorn.
The Intermission is over, and Jurassic Park begins...
Feature #2 - Jurassic Park...
This is another film that we did not catch at the Theatre or Drive-In so yes, this is going to be another thrilling watch for us, especially for me as I have been a fan of Dinosaurs growing up. ROAR!!!
Yikes! The T-Rex is loose!!!
After the movies were over, we left the lot and headed back home. This was a great night, even though it was late and I was a little tired from all the excitement, I was still mentally perked up from watching all these big monsters on the big screen and was grinning with satisfaction the whole drive home... We will be trying to catch up to as many classic flicks that will be playing at the many drive-ins this summer, I even heard the Evil Dead is one of them... I just cannot wait to take off and do this under the stars again...

First Movie Night Under the Stars 2020

It has been a little while since I made any blogs here since the COVID 19 pandemic came on. Just like everyone else, I switched up priorities in order to ensure the safety of the family for work and at home. Anyways, vacation for me started this week and I thought it was a good time to start getting onto the yard work and preparing the movie screen for Dead End Cinema, now while we are all still on social distancing, Dead End Cinema will still be open for our usual number of friends and the family that come out to watch movies with us, we normally have around 5 to 8 people on average.
It has been a couple years since we applied any new coat of paint, Last year the old tarp had a hole in it and the water ran down the side giving it a big stain in the upper right corner, not that it affected anything we watched last year but a good coat of paint is needed to preserve the wood anyways. We can thank Angie for a job well done!
Waiting for Sundown...
Thursday, May 27th marks a special day, it is our 25th anniversary! I have been lucky to have Angie, a very special woman in my life and we look forward to many more years together! Now that I got all that softy stuff out of the way... I started the morning finishing up whatever yard work that needed to be done. I am like it was so beautiful outside, I check the weather report and it says the rain was coming in the next few days starting around 2:00 a.m. so I'm like "Okay, I'm going to play a movie outside tonight" When the Babesweets came home, I told her I'm taking her out for dinner, We decided to go to our favorite Mexican restaurant, El Campesinos, Yum!
Poster
Now, I have read on various social media platforms about this movie, VFW, so we decided to go up to my local Family Video to look for it, lo and behold they had one copy! With all the excitement building up, we hurry back home setting up everything outside and preparing for our first night of the year under the stars starting with this movie. 9:00 pm rolled around and it is dark enough to begin the film. The three of us Angie, me, and my son JD were so ready to enjoy the evening!

Opening title on the screen...
VFW - Here we have some old war veterans who get together to do the normal drinking and reminiscing of old times and war tales at the VFW club and suddenly, a teen runs into their bar being chased down by punks doped up with a drug called "Hype" under orders of a drug overlord to retrieve the teen, but these veterans weren't having any of that and decided to fight back and protect the teen... All hell breaks loose! This is all I need to say! I recommend this film, I will be buying my own personal copy. Nuff' said. I kept this synapse short and sweet as to not give away any spoilers. Mr. Fright says, Go check it out! With the film being over and it's still nice outside, The little lady needed to go off to bed since she has to work. JD and I decided to play Rocky 3 since he has not seen all of the Rocky movies. We've been watching those and for me, a revisit is always good. Dead End Cinema has an opening night on Saturday, June 13th for everyone. We have not picked out any of the movies yet, Just stay tuned to our page on Facebook for updates.

History of Midnight Magazine - Issue #2

Issue #2
Yes! After the release of the first magazine, The question was "How often do I want to publish this?" after much thought, we decided on two times a year and stay as consistent as we can to get them published, the months chosen are January and July. The reason I preach consistency is I noticed a few zines so far behind their due date that many people began to lose interest, and I wouldn't want to do this to any audience we may have. The extra months gives many of us enough time to research and do articles and get them submitted in a reasonable amount of time while we work our paying jobs and time to do our extracurricular activities. Anyways, Issue #2, If I recall right, we had someone to do the cover art that did not come through, so I reached out to the amazing Colin Rodgers of Eerie Crypts and Naked Chicks to see if he could come up with something in a short amount of time, lo and behold, he had some incomplete art that only needed some added touches and details and this became the cover! This issue has the white interior pages as opposed to the cream we used in issue #1, slightly thicker paper stock for the cover than the interiors instead of card stock that was used for issue #1, the issue grew to 74 pages of art and contents and these are the reasons for the changes to be able to make it all cost-efficient for all of us. Many of you who bought this mag will notice the big changes in the formatting and set up compared to the original first issue run, this was the first step in making this magazine better. We have movie reviews/recaps of Alucarda by Lenny Buccellato, The Devils Rain by John Shatzer which is also a Blu-ray review for Severin films, Rockula by Mike Simms, Happy Birthday to Me by Vanessa Alucarda and The Blood Spattered Bride by Rick McKinney. We have book reviews, Death Tour by Mike Howlett, this was done on notebook paper as if it was an assignment in school, Reign of the Dead by John Shatzer. Fiction stories, The Silent City by Graham Swanson, The Widows Walk by Lenny Buccellato, An Occurrence at Franklin Hill Cemetary by Ed Holmes, Playing Possum by Terry Alexander. There are comic reviews by Kimberlee Jandreau and Doug Randazzo. Interviews with Jason Stephenson and Mike Mongillo. There are many other interesting articles, fan stories and paranormal stories by many folks mentioned above along with Denise Hargrove, David CJ Bunn, Christina Viruet, and myself. The Artists in this magazine feature works by Colin Rodgers, Doug Randazzo, Allen Koszowski, Matt "Putrid" Carr, Greg Mattson, Scott Brokos (Inked By Tony Fero) Erika Wright, Jeff Lamers, and Myself. This issue contained a few grammatical errors that I noticed much later which has made us much more diligent on looking for errors and such for later issues. Issue #2 is the lowest print run of the entire series, The reason being was I had worked out a deal with the print shop to do an "X" amount of books every now and then, as they run low, I will order 40 more, almost a "print on demand" as many of you will call it. When it came time to get the final 20 books, suddenly, without warning, the print shop was "Out of Business" so I left it at that...
Back Cover by the legendary Allen K.

There are 37 Contributor issues with the Green Cover variant and 143 regular issues with the white cover at 180 total. In conclusion, it was the toughest one to put together due to my learning the ways of an editor. Many folks I had heard from later on said they were sure I was going to be a "One and out and didn't think we had it in us to keep it going", for whatever reason they thought this, I wouldn't know... Being the "new kid on the block" it was an exciting time, I just needed to know how to network and keep it going, sales were slow yet pretty good to keep moving forward.

If anyone is still looking for this copy, you might get lucky and find one in the aftermarket like eBay or in the comics groups...
This concludes this History of MIDNIGHT! Magazine #2. I hope you all enjoyed it.

Protect your loose action figures with Stasis Case!

I was at the local comic shop looking around and the subject of loose Star Wars toys came up, and while I was saying all my loose toys were in these baggies... I was given a RED FLAG and then they led me to these affordable cases they have at the shop...

Stasis Case - The Next evolution in the protection and storage of your action figure and toy collection...

Ok... I took some cases home and I really like these, they have 2 sizes and both fit Star Wars and G.I. Joe action figures, they can also fit many other toys such as Micronauts, Cereal premiums, and etc. The cases themselves are adjustable for toys that stand pretty tall, it also comes with a case label and an accessory storage packet... I recommend it.
For more information on Stasis Case, email Stasiscase@gmail.com or go to their
Twitter page here: https://twitter.com/CaseStasis   or

Domestic & International Postage Increases...

Yes, they did... while working on the first batch of orders I noticed small increments higher in the media and first-class or priority postage cost, but it wasn't anything for me to worry about, now the international orders, there is a BIG difference... while mailing one book under one pound overseas or across the border, the cost is up really close to what I have set in place to cover, I was ok for the moment... now, here is the killer... if you order more than ONE BOOK and this will put the package over one pound and you are from the UK or anywhere in the world it almost DOUBLED what it cost to ship a single book!!!
I had to play "Suck it up Buttercup" and take the hits on a few orders. I went on to the Big Cartel and sadly had to adjust the shipping cost accordingly. All I can say for our fans around the world is there isn't much any of us can do, I know you die-hards will always be around to pick up an issue. My best advice is to buy only one at a time in intervals, The magazine is only 2 times a year and the digest is once. If you must have bulk orders, Contact me at midnightmagazine2017@gmail.com for a quote on a package and ill see what I can do.

Sincerely

Submission Guidelines for Midnight Magazine and Midnight Tales

Submission Guidelines for Midnight Magazine and Midnight Tales

by The Editorial Staff

Midnight Magazine / Midnight Tales is a labor of love. No one is going to make money on this endeavor. The best-case scenario is to cover the costs of making the magazine so that we all have a cool place to share our work and the readers have a chance to see it. The purpose of these guidelines isn’t to micromanage the contributors, but to limit the "labor" part of the labor of love. The quickest way to end a cool project like Midnight Magazine is to burn out the editorial staff by making them do the grunt work that the contributors can and should take care of themselves.

Part I: Formatting

When submitting an article, review or story to the magazine we ask that you please use the following guidelines. The submission must be in a .doc or .docx format. These are the standard formats used by Microsoft Word and free software like Open Office. Please do not send a .txt file or any other format. It will be impossible for us to edit the document for use in the magazine without a great deal of additional work.
Your document should be single-spaced, use the Times New Roman 11-point font, indent each paragraph with no spaces between them. Additionally, please make sure the title of your submission is italicized and you have your byline added. Take credit for your work! Basically, it should look like this document you are reading. Finally, please take the time to use spell check. It can be very time consuming to make these changes to every article submitted so your help is appreciated.
Any art that you submit should be sent in a format that can be modified. Obviously, we aren’t going to change your work, but there will be times that it needs to be resized to fit the available space. Much like the written submissions please make sure to sign your work. Take credit for the work that you are going to put out there. That is one of the main reasons that Midnight Magazine exists so take advantage of it.
Failure to follow the guidelines above will result in your work not appearing in the magazine. We don’t want that to happen and I’m sure you don’t either. Let us all stay on the same page and make this work.

Part II: Content

I know that we all want to write about our favorite director or movie. But think about your audience for a moment. The people who are going to buy and read Midnight Magazine already know about the greatness of Dawn of the Dead and George Romero. They have already watched all the special features of the latest release of Evil Dead and know all the stories. Unless you worked on or have special insight into a classic movie there isn’t anything you have to say that we all haven’t heard before. Don’t be surprised if your submission doesn’t get printed.
Instead, you should find that independent movie that people aren’t talking about. Or maybe that artist you like that not many people have heard of. This also goes for comics and magazines that you want to make other fans aware of. This is what the kind of readers that will spend their cash and time on Midnight Magazine want to see. Not only will that appeal to them but those filmmakers, artists, and writers will very much appreciate the exposure. There is nothing quite as satisfying as turning someone onto some movie, magazine, comic, or music you love. And you are helping those artists out as well.

Part III: Questions
If you have any questions or concerns about the submission guidelines please let us know. We are happy to answer any questions that you have as well as listen to your pitch for articles to let you know if that is something we are interested in printing. Thanks for your patience and we hope to see you in print. To get in touch with us send an email to midnightmagazine2017@gmail.com

History of Midnight Magazine - Issue #1

I decided to do a little history here for my first blog, In the late part of 2017, I suddenly had the urge to do a book, originally thinking about doing some sort of reprint exclusively for the Horror Magazines & Comics Group that I run on Facebook. After chatting online with my good friend and brother from another mother Mike Howlett, I took his advice and did not pursue the reprint idea as it has been overkill with reprints over the years from various publishers and still goes on to this day. Taking a seat back and thinking it over, I decided to do a "fanzine" for all things Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy. No, its nothing brand new but it was an outlet for the "mixed bag" folks like me and many of you, what we decided to cover was anything Comics, Magazine, Toy, Movie, Paperback in the said genres mixed with some fiction and real-life fan stories to entertain the audience.
The first one!!!
Thus, MIDNIGHT! was born... with the help of Mike, and some recruits that were all down for it, Issue #1 was published in January of 2018! what an exciting time! Now being new with editing and my wife Angela having a lifetime Office Word program, I decided to try my first attempt to make the issue, I will admit that I was a bit stubborn in letting some of the family members help me with the program but wanted to see how well I could do it.
Although they taught me some basics, The book came out pretty good, yet raw, sure there was line spacing and stuff I could have fixed and many other things and that was my fault for not letting the little lady help teach me fully, but on the other hand, I can say I did it to see what it was like! Either way, it was a fun #1 and a good start! Now a bit about the book and its contents... This Amazing cover art is done by none other than Doug Randazzo! I used a nice thick white cardstock cover and the interiors were done in a cream color to give a "pulp" look. after the Table of Contents and the Letter from the Editor, that's me, We have possibly, to me that is, an amazing introduction that was written up from Mike Howlett to get this book started. Then we have a great fan story from John Shatzer on going to see Killer Clowns at the theatre, then we go into a fiction story by Terry Alexander, then we have Mike's Paperback review of GILA by Les Simons, now this was a really cool article due to how he did it on notebook paper and we added the scans into the pages as if it was "Schoolwork", we go into a comic review from Kimberly Jandreau on Charltons GHOST MANOR series, Next up is another Fiction story told by Graham Swanson, here we have a Movie review/recap by Rick McKinney on Messiah of Evil, Doug Randazzo summons up a story in Memory Lane, I put out a fan story in the title of A Day in the Life of a Young Comic Collector, Doug Randazzo returns with a great review on Supernatural Thrillers #1, the book concludes with a section of various true paranormal stories that were submitted to read and a thank you section. The back cover has a Sexy Midnight Witch drawn up by Jeff Lamers with Sites to check out.  Overall with the cover, the book is at 40 pages,
Gila! by Mike Howlett

There are 4 variants, 1 good Blue color Prototype, 24 Yellow Color Contributor or Limited editions, 170 White regular editions, and 20 blue Grossfest editions, these were re-edited the way we do the mags now and suddenly its 32 pages with the correct edits and layouts. so 205 total issues in all and they are OOP. The art inside was various headers and pieces that were done by my daughter Erika and myself, another art piece was this Gila Monster Mike drew on his assignment... this has to be seen. I hope you all enjoyed this history on Midnight Magazine. - Mr. Fright
